Wheel Electronic (im folgenden abgekürzt "WE") ist eine universell einsetzbares Midi-Interface, das speziell zum Anschluss von Modulationsrädern oder Pitch-Bendern entwickelt wurde. Es können aber auch Joy-Sticks, Fußregler, Breath-Controller, Mehrfach-Fußtaster/Regler (analog oder nur an/aus) oder normale Potentiometer angeschlossen werden. Ein weiterer Anschluss ist für ein Sustain-Pedal vorgesehen.
Es können bis zu 4 stufenlos veränderbare "analoge" Bedienelemente und ein "digital" veränderliches Element für einen Schalt-Controller (Sustain-Pedal) angeschlossen werden. 		Wheel Electronic (abbreviation: "WE" in the following) is an universal electronics DIY Midi kit designed to connect modulation or pitch wheels. But it can be used also for joy sticks, single or multiple foot controllers (analog or on/off), breath controllers or even normal potentiometers. In addition a connector for a sustain foot switch is available.
Up to 4 continuously variable "analog" elements and a "digital" switching element (e.g. a sustain foot switch) can be connected.

Es können auch verschiedene Elemente kombiniert werden. Hier einige Beispiele:

  • Pitch-Bender, Modulationsrad, Volumenregler, Breath-Controller und Sustain-Pedal
  • Pitch-Bender, 3 Räder (z.B. für Modulation, Volumen, After-Touch) und ein Sustain-Pedal
  • Pitch-Bender, 2 Räder (z.B. für Modulation und After-Touch), ein Dreh- oder Schieberegler (für Volumen) und ein Sustain-Pedal
  • Pitch-Bender, Modulationsrad und Joy-Stick
  • 4 Fußregler für Volumen auf 4 Midi-Kanälen gleichzeitig
  • 2 Joysticks
  • 2-fach- oder 3-fach-Fußschalter/regler (d.h. an/aus oder analog) und Volumenregler
  • 2 Modulationsräder für die Steuerung der Rotationseffekte der Orgel-Emulatio B4 (von Native Instruments), 2 Dreh- oder Schieberegler für Volumen und Expression

Different elements can be combined simultaneously. Here are some examples:

  • pitch bender, modulation wheel, volume control (rotary or slider potentiometer), breath controller and sustain foot switch
  • pitch bender, three modulation wheels (e.g. modulation, volume, after touch) and sustain foot switch
  • pitch bender, two modulation wheels (e.g. modulation and after touch), one rotary or slider potentiometer (volume) and sustain foot switch
  • pitch bender, modulation wheel and joy stick
  • two joy sticks
  • four foot controllers for volume control of four Midi channels
  • dual or tripe foot controller (on/off or analog) and rotary or slider potentiometer
  • two modulation wheels or switches to control the rotary speakers of the organ software B4 (von Native Instruments), two rotary or slider potentiometers for volume and expression
Der Anschluss der 4 analogen Elemente erfolgt über 3-polige Stiftleisten. Für den Anschluss des Schalt-Controllers ist eine 2-polige Stiftleiste vorgesehen. Auf dem  obenstehenden Foto sind diese Stiftleisten als weiße Felder zu erkennen.
Vier 3-polige Kabelsätze und ein 2-poliger Kabelsatz (jeweils ca. 30 cm lang) mit passenden Buchsen zum Anschluss der Elemente sind im Lieferumfang enthalten (siehe untenstehende Abbildungen der Anwendungsbeispiele). 		The four "analog" elements are connected to pinheaders with 3 pins. For the "digital" switching element a pinheader with 2 pins is available. The pin headers are the white parts in the above picture.
Four 3-pin cable sets and one 2-pin cable set about 30cm each with suitable female connectors are included (please refer to the pictures of the applications examples below).
WE besitzt eine Reihe von Besonderheiten gegenüber anderen Midi-Controller-Elektroniken (z.B. Pocket Electronic):
  • Der obere Spannungswert, der dem Controller-Datenwert 127 zugeordnet ist, kann mit einem mehrgängigen Wendel-Trimmpotentiometer sehr genau eingestellt werden.Diese Maßnahme ist beispielsweise bei bestimmten Bauformen von Modulationsrädern, Fußreglern und Joysticks erforderlich, wenn nicht der volle Drehbereich des Potentiometers überstrichen wird. Wird in einem solchen Fall das betreffende Potentiometer zwischen Masse und +5V angeschlossen, so wird eine maximale Spannung ausgegeben, die deutlich unter +5V liegt (z.B. nur +3V). Auch Breath-Controller (z.B. Yamaha BC-1/2/3) geben nur Spannungen im Bereich von ca. 0...+3,5V ab. Bei Verwendung einer Elektronik, die den vollen Spannungsbereich 0...+5V auswertet, fehlt in einem solchen Fall der obere Bereich der Controllerwerte.
  • Der verwendete Spannungsbereich kann mit dem Trimmpotentiometer auf bis zu 0...+3 V reduziert werden. Für einen noch kleineren Bereich 0...+2 V kann gegen 5,00 Euro Aufpreis ein spezieller Prozessor (PIC16LF73) geliefert werden.
  • Für jedes der 4 Elemente kann mit einem Jumper gewählt werden, ob der volle Spannungsbereich (0...+5V) oder der mit dem Trimmpoti eingestelle Bereich für die Messung verwendet wird. Dies ist dann nötig, wenn verschiedene Elemente verwendet werden (z.B. Modulationsräder oder Fußregler mit eingeschränktem Drehbereich und normale Potentiometer oder Schieberegler mit vollem Bereich).
  • Falls einem Element Midi Pitch-Bend zugewiesen wird, so ist in der Mitte des Spannungs- bzw. Datenbereichs (Midi-Datenwert 64) ein "Plateau" vorhanden. Dies ist bei selbstrückstellenden Rädern oder Joysticks sinnvoll, da auf Grund mechanischer Toleranzen nicht immer genau die gleiche Ruheposition erreicht wird.
 WE has some special features compared to other Midi control electronics (e.g. Pocket Electronic):
  • The upper voltage that is assigned to the Midi data value 127 can be adjusted exactly with a multi-gang trimming potentiometer. This measure is necessary e.g. for modulation or pitch wheels, foot controllers or joy sticks that do not cover the complete angle of rotation. If such an element is connected to GND and +5V the maximal output voltage is much less than +5V (e.g. +3V only). Even breath controllers (e.g. Yamaha BC-1/2/3) output only about +3.5V maximal control voltage. If an electronics is used that analyses the full voltage range 0...+5V the higher Midi data values are missing.
  • The voltage range can be reduced with the trimming potentiometer to 0...+3V. For a still smaller range 0...+2 V another microcontroller (PIC16LF73) can be delivered at Euro 5.00 additional charge. 
  • For each of the four elements a jumper is used to select if the full voltage range (0...+5V) or the adjustable voltage range is used for measurement. This is necessary if different elements are used simultaneously (e.g. modulation wheels or foot controller with reduced voltage range and normal rotary or slider potentiometers with full voltage range).
  • If an element is assigned to Midi pitch bend a "plateau" is used in the middle of the voltage/data range (data value 64). This feature is meaningful in combination with spring-loaded wheels or joy sticks as due to mechanical tolerances the exact center position is not always reached.

Mit weiteren 4 Jumpern können bis zu 16 verschiedene Kombinationen von Midi-Controllern bzw. Pitch-Bend und After Touch angewählt werden, die sog. Presets.
Hinweis: In der ersten Version der Firmware sind noch nicht alle 16 Presets belegt !). Eine genaue Tabelle der verfügbaren Kombinationen finden Sie in der Anleitung.

Further four jumpers are used to select up to 16 different combinations of Midi control change numbers, pitch bend or after touch - the so-called presets.
Remark: In the first version of the firmware not yet all 16 presets are used !). A detailed list of all available combinations can be found in the user's manual.
Die anschließbaren Elemente (Modulationsräder, Joysticks, Fußregler, Drehregler, Schieberegler, Fußtaster etc.) sind nicht sind nicht im Lieferumfang enthalten, sondern müssen vom Kunden beigestellt bzw. als Ersatzteile zusätzlich erworben werden (siehe Zubehör und Ersatzteile). The elements connected to WE (e.g. wheels, joy sticks, foot controllers, normal potentiometers, foot switch) are not included but have to be added or purchased in addition by the customer (e.g. Accessories and Spare Parts).
Der Midi-Datenbereich beträgt 0...127 mit 7 Bit Auflösung.
Die Datenrate beträgt ca. 50-60 Samples/Sekunde (je nach zusätzlich eingehenden Midi-Daten, die zu den von WE erzeugten Daten hinzu gemerged werden müssen; die maximale Datenrate erhält man ohne zusätzliche Daten am Midi-Eingang). 		The Midi data range is 0...127 with 7 bit resolution.
The sampling rate is about 50-60 samples/second (according to incoming Midi data that have to be merged to the data generated by WE; the maximum rate is obtained without incoming Midi data).
Statt der genannten Bedienelemente können auch Spannungsquellen im Bereich 0...+5V angelegt werden. Ein Beispiel hierfür sind die Breath-Controller BC-1/2/3 von Yamahe. Es muss in diesem Fall unbedingt sichergestellt werden, dass die angelegten Spannungen nicht ausserhalb des Bereichs 0...+5V liegen (bezogen auf die WE-Masse). Andernfalls wird die Elektronik zerstört ! Even voltages sources can be used instead of the controlling elements. An example for this application are the Yamaha breath controllers BC-1/2/3.  In this case the voltages applied to WE have to be strictly within the range 0...+5V (referenced to WE GND) ! Voltages beyond this range will destroy the WE !
WE ist mit MIDI-In und MIDI-Out ausgestattet. Die am MIDI-Eingang eintreffenden Daten werden zu den Daten, die das WE erzeugt hinzugefügt (Merge-Funktion), sofern die Datenmenge nicht zu groß ist. Somit können mehrere WE kaskadiert werden, oder mit anderen Elektroniken (z.B. CTM64, MKE, Pocket Electronic, Dial Electronic) im Midi-Verbund betrieben werden. WE is equipped with MIDI In and MIDI Out. The incoming MIDI messages are merged to the data generated by WE- provided that the incoming Midi data range is not too big. In this way several WE can be linked together or combined with other electronics like CTM64, MKE, Pocket Electronic, Dial Electronic.
Eine LED zeigt die Midi-Aktivität von WE an. An LED is used to indicate the Midi activity.
WE ist nur als fertig aufgebaute und geprüfte Platine ohne Gehäuse lieferbar. Die Platinengröße beträgt ca. L60 x B55 x 25H (Maße in mm). Auf der Platine befinden sich mehrere Löcher mit 3 mm Durchmesser zur Montage der Platine auf einer geeigneten Unterlage (z.B. mit M3-Abstandsbolzen). WE is available only as an assembled and tested pc board. The pc board measures are about 60 mm (length) x 55 mm (width) x 25 mm (height). Several mounting holes with 3 mm diameter are available for mounting the pc board to a suitable base e.g. with distance sleeves or spacers and screws.
Ein Gehäuse ist nicht lieferbar, da dieses je nach den verwendeten Bedienelementen völlig unterschiedlich gestaltet sein müsste. We do not offer a suitable housing as this would have to be completely different for various combinations of controlling elements.
Die Stromversorgung erfolgt über ein externes Steckernetzteil (7-12V Gleichspannung / min. 100mA). Innerhalb Europas ist dieses im Lieferumfang enthalten (230V-Version mit Eurostecker).

 

 An external power supply (7-12VDC@min. 100mA) is used. Within Europe the wall outlet power supply adapter for 230V mains voltage and European type mains plug is included with the WE. In other countries the power supply has to be purchased by the user in his country. If there is a Doepfer representative in your country (see dealer) please ask the representative if the power supply is included in your country.
Für den Einbau bzw. den Anschluss des WE-Fertigmoduls sind elektronische Grundkenntnisse erforderlich!  Falls Sie selbst hierüber nicht verfügen so sollten Sie einen Fachmann zu Rate ziehen. Wir weisen darauf hin, dass wir nur im Orginalzustand befindliche Module zurücknehmen können. Module oder Kabel, an denen bereits gelötet wurde, können nicht zurückgenommen werden! Electronic basic knowledge is required to install the WE electronics and to connect the controlling elements resp. control voltages. If you are not sure if your knowledge is sufficient please consult an expert. We cannot take back modules that became defective because of wrong installation or wrong connection of the controlling elements or voltages. We also cannot take back modules or cables which have been soldered by the user.

Remark: The price does not include a free update to possible new firmware versions ! In the first version of the firmware not all presets are used ! Please look at the user's manual for details. Possible updates (i.e. a new microcontroller) will be not free of charge. The microcontroller is equipped with a socket for easy replacement.

Wenn man einige Kunststoff-Stege im Innenraum des FP5 entfernt und passende Löcher für die Midi-Buchsen und den Netzteilanschluss in die Seitenwand bohrt, kann die Wheel Electronic auch im Gehäuse des FP5 untergebracht werden. If some plastic bars inside the FP5 are removed and suitable holes for the Midi and supply sockets are drilled into the side plates of the FP5 the Wheel Electronic can be mounted even inside the FP5 case. That way one obtains e.g. a Midi volume pedal.
