A-100 Suitcase Version 6U (A-100P6)

A-100 Portable Theremin System

A-100P6 with built-in Theremin/Sequencer system

A-100P6
(the pictures still show an older version with A-100PSU2 without power supply cover)

For mobile use also portable suitcase versions of the A-100 cases are available. Inside the removable cover there is sufficient space to carry the system completely patched or to move patch chords and the power cable (valid only for original A-100 patch cables, for cables from other manufacturers with larger jack plugs there might be not sufficient space, actually about 50 mm space are available).
The A-100 suitcases can be used vertical or horizontal, provided that a suitable support is used (not available from us, the mains inlet and the power switch have to remain accessible). The suitcases are equipped with 4 rubber feet on the bottom and rear side and a handle on the top.

The A-100 suitcases are made of black wood with aluminium extrusions with the rail construction fixed to the other parts of the suitcase.

Note: The A-100P6 is not simply an empty wooden case that covers the standard 6HU frame but a completely independent construction that is not based on the 6U standard frame A-100G6. It is not possible to convert a A-100G6 into the suitcase version A-100P6!

The portable 6U suitcase A-100P6 has the same usable space available as the metal basic frame A-100G6, i.e. 2 x 84 HP.

The two bus boards and the standard power supply are mounted at the rear panel. Consequently the rear panel cannot be removed.

The upper picture shows an example that includes two Theremin modules A-178 and the Analog/Trigger Sequencer A-155 (among others).

The lower picture shows an empty A-100 suitcase version 2 with built-in power supply A-100PSU2.

The A-100 suitcases can be used to built in the A-100 Basic System 1 and 2. Please specify in your order if you want to have one of these systems built into a suitcase.

Even the A-100 mini system can be built into the A-100P6. In this case the lower half of the suitcase has to be filled with blind panels or modules that are not included in the mini system.

Of course the empty A-100P6 frame (just with power supply and bus boards) is available for customer specific arrangement of modules.

Measures:
outside: approx. 460 x 330 x 175 mm, without cover and rubber feet
outside: approx. 460 x 340 x 220 mm, with cover and rubber feet
inside: 2 x 84 HP x 3 U, usable depth for A-100 modules: approx. 70 mm in the power supply area (bottom right), resp. approx. 100 mm in the remaining area (measured from inner side of the front panel until end of the pc board of the module)

Quantity of bus boards: 2

Weight (without modules): about 7 kg

Maximum Output Current:
with built-in  A-100PSU2 (until about end of 2015): +12V/1200mA, -12V/1200mA

with built-in A-100PSU3 (since about early 2016): +12V/2000 mA, -12V/1200mA, +5V/4000mA

In the area near the power supply (bottom right) no modules should be assembled that are sensitive against transformer hum. We recommend to assemble only control voltage modules in this area (e.g. LFO, ADSR, trigger delay, clock divider/sequencer, sequencer, slew limiter, MIDI interfaces and so on) but no audio modules (VCO, VCF, VCA, VCP, frequency shifter, ring modulator, spring reverb and so on). Even modules width increased depth (e.g. A-113 or A-126) cannot be assembled in the power supply area. They have to be placed in a position outside the power supply area. But this applies only for a few modules. Normally it is no problem to arrange all modules by mounting modules with smaller depth in the power supply area.

A-100 Suitcase Version 9U (A-100P9)

(the pictures still show an older version with A-100PSU2 without power supply cover)

This an enlarged version of the A-100 suitcase with 9 U or three rows of modules. As only one power supply is required this is the most economic version of the A-100 suitcase. Apart from that the 9U version is identical to the 6U version.

Measures:
outside: approx. 465 (width) x 475 (height) x 170 (depth) mm, without cover and without rubber feet
outside: approx. 465 (width) x 485 (height) x 235 (depth) mm, with cover and with rubber feet
inside: 3 x 84 HP x 3 U, usable depth for A-100 modules: approx. 70 mm in the power supply area (bottom right), resp. approx. 100 mm in the remaining area (measured from inner side of the front panel until end of the pc board of the module)

Quantity of bus boards: 3

Weight (without modules): about 8,3 kg

Maximum Output Current:
with built-in  A-100PSU2 (until about end of 2015): +12V/1200mA, -12V/1200mA

with built-in A-100PSU3 (since about early 2016): +12V/2000 mA, -12V/1200mA, +5V/4000mA

A-100 Suitcase Base (A-100PB)

This is the "small brother" of the monster base A-100PMB. It is very similar to the A-100PMB but has only half the width (2 x 84 HP for installation of modules). The suitcase versions A-100P6 or A-100P9 can be positioned on top of the A-100PB because the width of the A-100PB is a bit more than the width of A-100P6/P9 and the footprint of the A-100PB is adapted to the depth of A-100P6/P9. A-100PB is equipped with one power supply (1200mA) and two bus boards. The bus boards are located in the rear area (even those for the modules that are mounted in the front row). This was necessary to take advantage of the full height of the front area for installation of A-100 modules.

Measures:
outside: approx. 510 (width) x 210 (height) x 420 (depth) mm
inside: 2 x 84 HP x 3 U
usable depth for A-100 modules front row: approx. 70 mm
usable depth for A-100 modules rear row: approx. 90 mm

Quantity of bus boards: 2

Weight (without modules): about 9 kg

Maximum Output Current:
with built-in  A-100PSU2 (until about end of 2015): +12V/1200mA, -12V/1200mA

with built-in A-100PSU3 (since about early 2016): +12V/2000 mA, -12V/1200mA, +5V/4000mA

A-100 Small Low Cost Case 3U / 48 HP (A-100LC1 / A-100LC1V)

Different views of the empty A-100LC1/A-100LC1V
click to the picture for higher resolution

The A-100LC1 is very similar to the A-100LC3 but offers only 48 HP for installation of modules. A-100LC3 is equipped with the power supply A-100SSB.
The case is made of raw wood without laquering. The case can be varnished by the customer in any desired color e.g. by means of a spray can.
It is also
available with black coating :A-100LC1V

Measures in mm:
outside: approx. 262
(width) x 158 (depth) x 154 (height)
inside: 1 x 48 HP (244 mm) x 3 U (one short bus board), useable depth for A-100 modules: approx. 110/45 mm (measured from inner side of the front panel until end of the pc board of the module), because of the built in power supply the depth is reduced at the right side:

Quantity of bus boards: 1 (short version with 8 module connectors)

Weight: about 1.5 kg (without modules, without mains cable)

Electrical specifications:
mains voltage: 110 ... 240V~ (IEC connector at the rear panel, the mains cable is not included because of the many different versions for different countries)
output voltages/current: +12V/380mA, -12V/380mA,
+5V/100mA (the +5V current is taken from the +12V supply, i.e. the sum of the +12V current and the +5V current has to be less than 380mA)

Important note: the load regulation of the power supply used in the A-100LC1 (A-100SSB) is not as good as the load regulation of the "big" A-100 power supplies (A-100PSU2, A-100PSU3 and the power supply of DIY kit #1). That's why we recommend not to use the A-100LC1 with modules which are sensitive to supply voltage changes. In the first place VCOs are affected. If modules with changing loads (especially modules with LEDs) are installed together with VCOs pitch modulations may be the result. The A-100LC1 should be used only with modules which are immune to slight supply voltage changes (typically control modules like ADSR, LFO, random and most of the sound processing modules like VCFs or VCAs).

This is the 3U version of the low cost cases A-100LC6/LC9. The A-100LC3 is very similar to the A-100LC6 but offers only one row with 84 HP for installation of modules. A-100LC3 is equipped with one power supply (1200mA) and one bus board. Because of the limited space the power suppy of the DIY-Kit #1 with an external transformer is used (same as for the DIY-Kit #1: 15V AC/2500mA). At the left side of the case the connector for the external transformer is located. The external transformer is not shown in the pictures. A suitable transformer for the US market is manufactured by Triad Magnetics and has the product name WAU16-2400 (16V AC / 2.4A). It is available from several electronic shops like Mouser, Digikey, Newark, Farnell and others.

The case is made of raw wood without laquering. The case can be varnished by the customer in any desired color e.g. by means of a spray can.
It is also
available with black coating :A-100LC3V

Measures:
outside: approx.
445 (width) x 160 (depth) x 150 (height)
inside: 1 x 84 HP x 3 U (one bus board), useable depth for A-100 modules: approx. 110 mm (measured from inner side of the front panel until end of the pc board of the module)

Quantity of bus boards: 1

Weight (without modules): about 2.5 kg without external transformer, about 3.5 kg with external transformer

Electrical specifications:
mains voltage: 115V~
or 230V~ (please specify when you order because of the correct voltage fo the external power supply)
output voltages/current: +12V/1200mA, -12V/1200mA, in contrast to the other A-100 cases the A-100 LC3 has no +5V available ! If required the 5V adapter A-100AD5 can be used.

IF you want to run the A-100LC3 with another supply please refer to A-100 DIY Kit #1. The DIY kit uses the same supply as the A-100LC3.

technical data of the external power supply: 15V AC / 2500 mA output, low voltage connector 5.5/2.1 mm outer/inner diameter, the supply is included with the A-100LC3

A-100 Low Cost Case 6U / 84HP (A-100LC6 / A-100LC6V)

Different views of the empty A-100LC6
(the pictures still show an older version with A-100PSU2 without power supply cover)

This is an economical version of the A-100 suitcase. It is made very simple without front cover, without the metal rails and corners of the suitcase version described above. In other respects the low cost suitcase is identical to the suitcases described above (i.e. it includes the A-100 PSU2/PSU3 and two bus boards).

The case is made of raw wood without laquering. The case can be varnished by the customer in any desired color e.g. by means of a spray can.

A-100 Low Cost Base 2x3U / 84HP (A-100LCB / A-100LCBV)

Different views of the empty A-100 low cost base A-100LCB
click to the picture for higher resolution

The A-100 Low Cost Base has the same width as the A-100 Low Cost Cases (A-100LC6/LC9) and is planned as a base frame for the A-100 Low Cost Cases. But it can be used also as a stand alone unit. One power supply (A-100PSU2/PSU3) and two bus boards are built in.

The A-100 Low Cost Base has two rows for modules available: one with horizontal alignment and another 45 degrees inclined row. The useable width is the same as for the Low Cost Cases, i.e. 84 HP. The bus boards are located in the rear area (even those for the modules that are mounted in the front row). This was necessary to take advantage of the full height of the front area for installation of A-100 modules. The max. depth for modules in the front row is ~70 mm.

The case is made of raw wood without laquering. The case can be varnished by the customer in any desired color e.g. by means of a spray can.

The monster cases are available even with 6U and 9U. The reason for these additional cases is that the 12U monster cases are a bit difficult to handle by one person only. On top of this it is necessary to have available smaller versions of the monster cases when they are mounted together as shown in the pictures on the left side (because of stability and appearance - with a 6U case as upper element the construction looks not that "intimidating").

A-100 Monster Base Frame 2x3U / 168HP (A-100PMB)

A-100PMB Front View
A-100PMB Angled View
The A-100 Monster Base has the same width as the A-100 Monster Cases (A-100PMS6/9/12) and is planned as a base frame for the A-100 Monster Cases. But it can be used also as a stand alone unit without the Monster Case. It has a removeable top cover with handle for easy transportation. Two A-100 power supplies and four bus boards are built in.
The A-100 Base Frame has two rows for modules available: one with horizontal alignment and another 45 degrees inclined row. The useable width is the same as for the Monster Case, i.e. 168 HP. Because of the more complicated mechanical construction the lenght of the Monster Base is a bit more than the lenght of the Monster case. This has the advantage that even two standard suitcases or low cost suitcases can be positioned side by side on top of the A-100 base frame.
All bus boards are located in the rear area (even those for the modules that are mounted in the front row). This was necessary to take advantage of the full height of the front area for installation of A-100 modules. The max. depth for modules in the front row is ~70 mm.

Mounting of several A-100 monster cases

A-100PMB + A-100PMS9 + A-100PMS9 (not recommended)

Combination of A-100PMB + A-100PMS9 + A-100PMS6
connected with the monster case connectors A-100MVW and A-100MVG
The pictures show the cases without power supplies and bus boards.

Several monster cases can be mounted together as shown in the picture on the left side. For this purpose we offer two types of connectors:

  • A-100MVG: set of two straight connectors, includes 4 hexagon head screws M6x10 and 4 plastic washers
  • A-100MVW: pair of angled connectors, includes 4 hexagon head screws M6x10 and 4 plastic washers

You find the sets in the price list near the monster cases. The connectors are black coated and mounted by means of hexagon screws and washers. The pictures still show blank prototypes of the connectors with curled screws. The final versions of the connector sets are black coated and the angled version has a fixed angle (no hinge). Due to safety reasons hexagon screws are used instead of kurled screws.

The pictures show an assembly that consists of an A-100PMB and two A-100PMS9 (this combination is not recommended !). The three components have to be fixed at the rear side by screw fittings to obtain stability and to avoid overturning. For transportation the screw fittings can be released so that each of the three components can be carried by one person only.

These case combinations are recommended:

  • A-100PMB / A-100MVG / A-100PMS12 / A-100MVW or A-100MVG / A-100PMS6
  • A-100PMB / A-100MVG / A-100PMS9 / A-100MVW or A-100MVG / A-100PMS6
  • A-100PMB / A-100MVG / A-100PMS6 / A-100MVW or A-100MVG / A-100PMS6

Other combinations are possible (e.g. A-100PMB+A-100PMS12+A-100PMS9 or A-100PMB+A-100PMS9+A-100PMS9) but not recommended because of the unsufficient mechanical stability. You may combine cases in other configurations at your own risk.

Even for the connection of A-100LMB and A-100LMS9 the connector set A-100MVG can be used:

  • A-100LMB / A-100MVG / A-100LMS9

It would be possible to put a second A-100LMS9 on top of the first A-100LMS9 and connect them by means of another A-100MVG. But that's not recommended because of the unsufficient mechanical stability. You may use this configurations at your own risk.

The prices for the A-100MVW and A-100MVG can be found in the price list in the A-100 section.

Note:
The A-100MVG and A-100MVW cannot be used to mount the 84 HP cases (A-100PB, A-100P6, A-100P9, A-100LCB, A-100LC6, A-100LC9 ...) because these cases are not equipped with the required threads required for the A-100MVG/A-100MVW. The reason is that there is not sufficient place in these cases for the threads because of the bus boards and power supplies.

A-100 Miniature Cases 3U / 32HP

We also offer a miniature version of the A-100 suitcase. This is intended for applications with a few A-100 modules only, e.g. a small sound processing systems with filters or BBD modules, or for a basic Theremin. Details can be found on the A-100 Miniature Cases page.
